This DTC indicates a short to body ground in the Left Curtain Shield Airbag ignition circuit — Seal 6 EV
This DTC indicates a short to body ground in the Left Curtain Shield Airbag ignition circuit.
In the BYD SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) architecture, B170511 constitutes a critical safety fault, indicating an abnormally low-resistance path (typically <1Ω) in the wiring from the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) to the left curtain airbag igniter.
The left curtain shield airbag mounts above the driver's side headliner, extending from the A-pillar to the C-pillar.
A short to ground results in the following: 1) The curtain airbag fails to deploy normally during a collision (ignition current diverts to the vehicle body); 2) The ACU continuously detects abnormal circuit resistance, illuminates the airbag warning light, and disables the entire SRS; 3) Unintended deployment occurs in extreme cases due to momentary circuit energization.
This fault involves a pyrotechnic device ignition circuit (trigger current approx. 1.5-2A, pulse voltage approx. 24-30V).
Strictly follow high-voltage safety procedures.
Disconnect the battery and wait for the capacitors to discharge before repairing.
- 1Mechanical damage to the left A-pillar/B-pillar wiring harness: During removal and installation of the left A-pillar, B-pillar, or C-pillar interior trim panels, or during accident repairs, metal clips or sharp sheet metal edges cut the insulation of the curtain airbag wiring harness (wrapped in yellow corrugated conduit), causing the copper core to short to body ground. This is relatively common on Qin PRO series models.
- 2Connector water ingress and oxidation: An aged sealing ring on the left curtain airbag connector (usually located at the base of the A-pillar or front of the headliner, part number GJ101/GJ102 series) allows water entry after car washing or wading. This oxidizes the pins and forms a conductive path, causing a short to ground.
- 3Improper modification damage: When installing left A-pillar ambient lighting, routing left-side dashcam wiring, or modifying the audio system, fixing screws or harness retaining clips pierce the dedicated SRS wiring harness, or aftermarket wiring harnesses compress the factory curtain airbag harness, causing insulation damage.
- 4Curtain airbag module internal fault: Damaged insulation layer between the internal bridge wire of the left curtain airbag igniter and the housing causes an internal short to ground (usually accompanied by airbag deployment history, extreme high temperatures, or component aging).
- 5Body ground circuit interference: Loose left body ground bolt (e.g., left instrument panel bracket ground point) causes arcing, burning through the adjacent SRS wiring harness insulation and causing a secondary short circuit.
- 1Safe power-down and wait: Turn off the ignition switch, disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least 3 minutes to ensure the ACU capacitor discharges completely. Wear an anti-static wrist strap. Do not use radio equipment in the repair area.
- 2Fault status confirmation: Connect the VDS2000/VDS2100 diagnostic tool. Read DTC B170511 and freeze frame data. Distinguish between a Current fault and a History fault. Record vehicle speed, temperature, and other environmental parameters at the time the fault occurred.
- 3Initial visual inspection and disassembly: Remove the left A-pillar upper trim panel, left headliner trim panel, and sun visor. Inspect the curtain airbag wiring harness (yellow twisted pair) for obvious damage, crushing, burns, or contact with metal components. Focus on the harness routing at the bottom of the A-pillar and the upper section of the B-pillar.
- 4Resistance measurement for fault tracing: Disconnect the ACU connector (usually located under the center console or in front of the gear selector). Use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance between the left curtain airbag circuit (pins usually marked CUR_L+ / CUR_L- or A15/A16) and body ground. Normal resistance is >10MΩ. A reading <1Ω confirms a short to ground.
- 5Section isolation check: Disconnect the curtain airbag harness intermediate connector at the bottom of the left B-pillar or A-pillar. Measure resistance to ground on the ACU side and the airbag side separately to pinpoint which section contains the short circuit (wiring harness section or airbag module section).
- 6Detailed wiring harness inspection: If the short circuit is in the wiring harness section, carefully inspect the harness outer sheath along the left side of the dashboard, the A-pillar, and the headliner edge. Use a probe to gently lift the harness to check for hidden damage. Check for detached harness retaining clips causing the harness to move and chafe.
- 7Repair or replace: If the wiring harness has minor damage (<5mm), repair it by wrapping it with two layers of special high-temperature tape (Kapton tape). If the damage is severe or the harness is broken, replace the left side curtain airbag wiring harness assembly. Do not splice the harness.
- 8Connector handling: If the connector has water ingress, thoroughly clean the pins with electronic contact cleaner, apply conductive protective grease, and replace the sealing ring or the entire connector assembly. Verify the locking clip is intact.
- 9System verification: After repair, reconnect all connectors and connect the battery. Use VDS to clear the fault code. Execute the 'SRS System Self-diagnosis' and 'Igniter Resistance Check' functions. Confirm the B170511 status changes to 'Passed'. Perform a road test over a rough surface to confirm the fault does not reoccur.
