DTC B1709 indicates the left side curtain airbag (located at the top left of the vehicle, protecting front and rear occupant heads during side impacts) igniter circuit resistance falls below the SRS control unit threshold. (Standard resistance is typically 2.0–3.0 Ω; "low resistance" generally indicates a measured value below 1.5 Ω or near 0 Ω.) This indicates a short in the igniter circuit.
Possible causes include a shorted internal squib, a wiring harness short to ground, a wire-to-wire short, or an internal connector short.
This fault forces the SRS system into a degraded mode: during a collision, the left side curtain airbag may fail to deploy (loss of protection), or in extreme cases, deploy unintentionally.
The system illuminates the airbag warning lamp to indicate an occupant safety system hazard, requiring immediate repair.

- 5Harness continuity and insulation check: Leave the curtain airbag disconnected. Measure the resistance between the harness-side connector terminals and body ground (should be >1 MΩ). Measure the resistance between the two terminals (should be >1 MΩ; continuity indicates a short circuit in the harness). If necessary, remove the headliner to check the harness routing.
- 6SRS ECU check: Check the SRS control unit connector (usually located under the center console or near the gear selector) for oxidation or backed-out pins. Measure the wiring harness continuity between the ECU and the curtain airbag to rule out intermittent short circuits.
- 7Replacement verification: If the wiring harness is normal, perform a replacement test using a known-good left side curtain airbag. Clear the fault code, repeatedly cycle the power to perform a self-check, and confirm the fault does not return.
- 8System reset and test: Restore all connections, reconnect the battery, and use the diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. Perform the 'SRS system self-check' procedure. Confirm the instrument cluster airbag warning lamp turns off normally 6 seconds after switching the ignition ON. Perform a road test to verify.
