DTC B161212 indicates a short to battery in the passenger front airbag deployment circuit.
In the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) circuit, two wires (typically high-side and low-side deployment wires) connect the airbag module to the Airbag Control Unit (ACU).
Under normal conditions, these two wires have no continuity to the vehicle power supply (+12V/B+).
When the diagnostic system detects abnormally low resistance (typically <10Ω) between the airbag circuit wiring and the battery positive terminal, it identifies a short to battery.
This fault forces the Airbag Control Unit into fail-safe mode, disabling the passenger airbag to prevent accidental deployment and personal injury.
Damaged wiring harness insulation, an internal connector short, or an internal airbag module fault can cause this condition.
Address this Level 1 safety fault immediately.
- 1Worn or aged front passenger airbag wiring harness insulation chafing and shorting to power wires inside the dashboard (such as the cigarette lighter or audio power supply).
- 2Damaged internal contacts or a shorted coil in the airbag clock spring causes power to feed into the airbag circuit.
- 3Water ingress, oxidation, or conductive foreign matter (such as metal debris or spilled liquid) in the front passenger airbag module connector causing a short circuit between pins.
- 4Improper wiring during vehicle modification or accessory installation (such as a dash cam or navigation system) incorrectly connects the power wire to the airbag circuit.
- 5SRS control unit internal drive circuit fault, causing the output terminal to continuously output high-level power supply voltage.
- 1Safety preparation: Disconnect the battery negative terminal, wait at least 90 seconds (to fully discharge the SRS capacitor), and wear an anti-static wrist strap.
- 2Preliminary check: Read the DTC freeze frame data, record the vehicle speed, time, and other information when the fault occurred, and check the vehicle for a history of accidents, water ingress, or modifications.
- 3Visual inspection: Remove the front passenger side dashboard trim panel and check the airbag wiring harness for obvious damage, pinching, or burn marks. Specifically inspect the airbag connector (yellow) for looseness, water ingress, or corrosion.
- 4Circuit measurement: Disconnect the airbag module connector. Use a high-impedance digital multimeter to measure the voltage to ground on each of the two airbag circuit wires. A +12V reading indicates a short to power.
- 5Fault isolation: Isolate the circuit in sections. Sequentially disconnect the connectors between the SRS ECU and the airbag module. Measure the voltage at the harness-side terminals to locate the short circuit (commonly found at dashboard frame interference points or wiring harness bends).
- 6Component test: If the wiring harness is normal, measure the resistance between the airbag module connector terminals (normal: 2-3Ω, isolated from power supply). If abnormal, replace the airbag module.
- 7Repair verification: Repair the wiring harness (re-wrap, or replace the harness or connector). Maintain at least 20cm clearance from the power cable. After restoring the connection, clear the fault code and perform an SRS system self-test (ignition switch ON; the airbag warning light should illuminate for 6 seconds, then turn off).
- 8Final confirmation: Perform a road test or simulated vibration test to confirm the fault code does not recur. Use a diagnostic tool to read the SRS live data stream and confirm the front passenger airbag resistance is within the normal range (1.5-3.0Ω).
