DTC B1709 indicates the left side curtain airbag (located at the top left of the vehicle, protecting front and rear occupant heads during side impacts) igniter circuit resistance falls below the SRS control unit threshold — Atto 3
DTC B1709 indicates the left side curtain airbag (located at the top left of the vehicle, protecting front and rear occupant heads during side impacts) igniter circuit resistance falls below the SRS control unit threshold. (Standard resistance is typically 2.0–3.0 Ω; "low resistance" generally indicates a measured value below 1.5 Ω or near 0 Ω.) This indicates a short in the igniter circuit.
Possible causes include a shorted internal squib, a wiring harness short to ground, a wire-to-wire short, or an internal connector short.
This fault forces the SRS system into a degraded mode: during a collision, the left side curtain airbag may fail to deploy (loss of protection), or in extreme cases, deploy unintentionally.
The system illuminates the airbag warning lamp to indicate an occupant safety system hazard, requiring immediate repair.
- 1Internal short circuit in the left side curtain airbag igniter: Manufacturing defects, aging, or moisture ingress cause abnormally low internal resistance in the curtain airbag igniter charge or bridge wire.
- 2Short circuit due to physical wiring harness damage: Improper removal and installation, wear, or crushing damages the wiring harness insulation near the A-pillar trim, headliner, or sunroof frame, causing a short to ground or short between wires.
- 3Connector fault: Water ingress (leaking from a blocked sunroof drain tube), corrosion, bent pins, or backed-out pins at the wiring harness connector above the left B-pillar or in the headliner cause a short circuit between terminals.
- 4SRS control unit (ACU) internal fault: Damaged curtain airbag drive/detection circuit components inside the control unit cause a false low resistance reading (less common, but rule this out).
- 5Retrofitted or added equipment: When installing a dashcam, headliner ambient lighting, or modifying the sunroof, mounting screws pierce the wiring harness, or metal frame edges pinch the wiring harness, causing a short circuit.
- 1Safety preparation: Power down the vehicle, disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal, wait at least 3 minutes (to ensure the SRS capacitor fully discharges to prevent accidental airbag deployment), and wear an anti-static wrist strap.
- 2Initial Diagnosis: Use VDS or a dedicated diagnostic tool to read all fault codes and freeze frame data. Confirm whether B1709 is a Current or History fault. Record the vehicle status when the fault occurred.
- 3Visual inspection: Check the left curtain airbag module (located inside the left roof trim panel) and the wiring harness connectors inside the A-pillar upper trim panel for obvious damage, signs of water ingress, burn marks, or abnormal looseness. Check the vehicle for signs of accident repair.
- 4Resistance measurement (disconnected): Disconnect the left curtain airbag connector (yellow plug, usually with a shorting bar). Use a multimeter to measure the resistance between the airbag-side terminals. The normal value is 2.0-3.0 Ω. If <1.0 Ω or close to 0 Ω, replace the left curtain airbag assembly.
- 5Harness continuity and insulation check: With the curtain airbag disconnected, measure the resistance between the harness-side connector terminals and body ground (should be >1MΩ). Measure the resistance between the two terminals (should be >1MΩ; continuity indicates a harness short circuit). If necessary, remove the headliner to inspect the harness routing.
- 6SRS ECU inspection: Check the SRS control unit connector (usually under the lower centre console or near the gear selector) for oxidation or backed-out pins. Measure wiring harness continuity between the ECU and the curtain airbag to rule out intermittent short circuits.
- 7Replacement verification: If the wiring harness is normal, perform a replacement test using a known-good left curtain airbag. Clear the fault code, repeatedly power on to run the self-check, and confirm the fault does not return.
- 8System reset and test: Restore all connections, reconnect the battery, and use the diagnostic tool to clear the fault code. Perform the 'SRS system self-check' procedure. Confirm the instrument cluster airbag warning light turns off normally 6 seconds after ignition ON. Perform a road test to verify.
