DTC B17631A indicates the Right Front Side Curtain Airbag ignition circuit resistance is 0 ohms.
This means the control module detects a short circuit (short to ground or short to power) in the airbag circuit.
In the airbag system (SRS), normal inflator resistance ranges from 1.5Ω to 3.0Ω.
A 0-ohm resistance indicates abnormal circuit continuity, presenting the following risks: 1) The side curtain airbag fails to deploy during a collision, resulting in a loss of side impact protection. 2) The wiring short circuit causes unintended airbag deployment in extreme cases.
This constitutes a hard fault in the SRS and typically illuminates the SRS warning light continuously.
The system enters fail-safe mode and disables the Right Front Side Curtain Airbag.
- 1Airbag wiring harness short to ground: The right front side curtain airbag wiring harness chafes inside the A-pillar, C-pillar, or headliner. Damaged insulation causes the wire to ground to the vehicle body, resulting in 0 resistance.
- 2Airbag connector fault: Water ingress, oxidation, or bent pins at the headliner or door frame airbag connector cause a short circuit, resulting in continuity between the signal wire and ground.
- 3Internal short circuit in the airbag unit: The curtain airbag inflator igniter has an internal short circuit (very rare, but a manufacturing defect may cause this).
- 4SRS control module internal fault: Damaged internal monitoring circuit falsely reports a short circuit fault; actual wiring harness and airbag unit are normal.
- 5Clock spring or slip ring fault (if applicable): Although curtain airbags usually connect directly, a short circuit in the slip ring can cause this fault on models with movable connections.
- 1Safety preparation: Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds (some models require 3 minutes) to fully discharge the SRS capacitor and prevent accidental airbag deployment during repair.
- 2Visual inspection: Remove the right A-pillar trim, headliner edge, and right front door seal. Inspect the curtain airbag wiring harness for wear, crushing, or signs of water ingress. Focus on contact points between the harness and sharp metal edges on the vehicle body.
- 3Connector check: Disconnect the connector between the SRS control module and the right front side curtain airbag. Inspect the pins for oxidation, deformation, or short circuits caused by foreign objects.
- 4Resistance measurement: Use a multimeter to measure the airbag-side wiring harness resistance (should be infinite, open circuit). Measure the airbag unit resistance (should be 1.5-3.0 Ω). If the airbag unit resistance is 0, replace the airbag assembly. If the wiring harness has continuity to ground, repair the wiring harness.
- 5Wiring harness repair: If the wiring harness is damaged, wrap it with waterproof insulating tape or replace the damaged harness section. Securely fasten the harness to prevent interference with metal body parts.
- 6Control module check: If the wiring harness and airbag unit are normal, measure continuity between the corresponding SRS control module pins. If testing confirms an internal short circuit, replace the SRS control module.
- 7System Reset and Verification: Reconnect all connectors and restore battery power. Use the diagnostic tool to clear the fault code and perform the SRS system self-check. Confirm B17631A does not return and verify the right front curtain airbag resistance reads normal (1.5-3.0Ω).
