DTC B1775 indicates the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) detects a short to ground in the right rear seat belt pretensioner circuit.
The seat belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic actuator containing an explosive device and a resistance wire.
Normal resistance is approximately 2-3 Ω.
When the SRS control module detects circuit resistance below the threshold (typically <1 Ω) or an abnormal voltage drop to ground, it identifies a short to ground.
This safety-critical fault causes: 1) the SRS to enter degraded mode, disabling right rear side impact protection; 2) continuous illumination of the airbag warning light; 3) a risk of unintended pretensioner deployment in extreme cases.
The pretensioner wiring harness routes through the right rear door sill trim and C-pillar, exposing it to seat movement, liquid ingress, or mechanical damage.
- 1Long-term chafing of the wiring harness under the right rear seat: During fore/aft seat adjustment or folding, the pretensioner wiring harness chafes against the seat frame or floor, damaging the insulation and causing a short to body ground.

- 1Safe power-down and wait: Disconnect the low-voltage battery negative terminal and wait at least 90 seconds. This ensures the SRS capacitor discharges completely and prevents pretensioner deployment during diagnosis.
- 2Freeze frame data analysis: Use the VDS2000 diagnostic tool to read freeze frame data at the time of the fault, including vehicle speed, crash signal, and voltage, to determine if the fault is intermittent.
- 3Visual inspection: Remove the right rear sill trim panel and lower C-pillar trim panel. Inspect the pretensioner wiring harness (typically featuring yellow sleeving) for wear, cuts, or burn marks. Focus on the area beneath the seat mounting points and the C-pillar transition area.
- 4Pretensioner resistance measurement: Disconnect the pretensioner connector (use a short-circuit protection plug). Measure the pretensioner body resistance using a digital multimeter. Normal value is 2.0-3.0Ω. If <1Ω, replace the pretensioner assembly.
- 5Harness insulation check: With the pretensioner connector disconnected, measure harness-to-ground resistance; the value must be >1MΩ. Measure continuity between the SRS ECU and pretensioner harness ends, and verify no short to ground.
- 6Locating the short circuit: If the wiring harness has a short circuit, use the sectional isolation method (cut the wire at the midpoint or disconnect the intermediate connector) to identify the exact short circuit location. Repair the wiring harness using solder and heat-shrink tubing (do not simply twist the wires).
- 7Component replacement: If the pretensioner has an internal short circuit, replace the right rear seat belt assembly (the pretensioner is usually integrated with the seat belt retractor). After replacement, re-mark the wiring harness routing and secure it firmly.
- 8System reset and verification: Reconnect all connectors and restore power. Use the diagnostic tool to clear the fault code. Perform the 'SRS system self-check' and 'crash sensor test' (software simulation, without triggering pyrotechnic devices). Verify B1775 does not return and the warning light is off.
